One Time
By Dan Gabel
Frank went a buck twenty-five, with gloves tied to his hands
Fought featherweight in the Air Force 'till he couldn't take commands
Went home and found a barstool, forgot about his size
Mouthed off to the biggest locals and kept getting out alive
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Frank once loved a Scottish lass, he was taken by her brogue
They say she grew tired of life with such a rogue
So he swore off love forever, stayed single all his days
Said he gave it all one time, but it didn't go his way
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Frank said to do it one time
Lucky Strike un-filtereds from the day he was fifteen
Left stains between his fingers that never quite came clean
When they took his breath, he never cried about his plight
Said he'd tried that one time, and it didn't quite feel right
CHORUS
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Get out there while you're young
Take chances while you can
He said do it all one time
'Cause regret... will haunt a man
I have a tattered black-and-white of Frank back in his day
That fedora on his head and a beer not far away
I think about him often, and how he helped me fly
So Frank, here's to you, I remember, one time
CHORUS
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Get out there while you're young
Take chances while you can
He said do it all one time
'Cause regret... will haunt a man

Washing My Mind

Washing My Mind
By Dan Gabel
I'm clearing my head, of small things from the past
The loves that I lost, and the days that don't last
The time on the job, seemed precious back then
But sitting here now, I don't understand how
It's just a means to an end
CHORUS
I'm just washing my mind, trying to leave this behind
You said my heart's made the turn, but my head it still yearns
To hold on to my pride, keep on fighting for time
But I'll sit here by your side, watch the old grudges fly
I'm just washing my mind
I was so sure of my place
At the top of that heap
But my mountain's just a hill
It's not even that steep
So I'm coming down now
A slow step at a time
To take in the view
Right here beside you
And this sight clears my mind
CHORUS
I'm just washing my mind, trying to leave this behind
You said my heart's made the turn, but my head it still yearns
To hold on to my pride, keep on fighting for time
But I'll sit here by your side, watch the old habits fly
I'm just washing my mind
I guess I made a fair run
With the time I had
You know this cabin I built
Didn't turn out half bad
But, man, letting go
Ain't so easy to do
Thank god for you, girl
And our slice of the world
Cause you're helping me through
CHORUS
I'm just washing my mind, trying to leave this behind
You said my heart's made the turn, but my head it still yearns
To hold on to my pride, keep on fighting for time
But I'll sit here by your side, watch the old)memories fly
I'm just washing my mind

I Miss The Silence
Dan Gabel
A year ago you walked out that door
Saying your other dreams couldn't wait anymore
Left me all alone in this quiet old house
Fighting to forget the life we dreamed about
Another month and I'd have surely cracked
But you walked through that door saying you wanted back
Tales of your adventure and all the friends you found
Made me think about my time when you weren't around
CHORUS
I miss the silence
that I used to fear
When you were running 'round and I was sitting here
I miss the silence
I used to dread my dear
So please don't get me wrong
I love your pretty songs
I don't want you gone
But sometimes...
I miss the silence
That guitar sat alone in the chair
While I sat missing your sound in the air
Now you're softly strumming "Let it Be"
Imagine my surprise at this thought hitting me
CHORUS
I miss the silence
that I used to fear
When you were running 'round and I was sitting here
I miss the silence
I used to dread my dear
So please don't get me wrong
I love your pretty songs
I don't want you gone
But sometimes...
I miss the silence
I took to rising early for the peace
The morning sun so soft, the stillness that’s released
You’ll be rising soon and I'm so glad
Cause you being around is worth missing what I had.
CHORUS
I miss the silence
that I used to fear
When you were running 'round and I was sitting here
I miss the silence
I used to dread my dear
So please don't get me wrong
I love your pretty songs
I don't want you gone
But sometimes...
I miss the silence

St. Boniface
Lyrics and Music by Dan Gabel
I start walking when daylight fades
Moving to keep this City at bay
It’s always here on my battered heels
Crushing me beneath cold wheels
Now I stand before this door
With the drunks, the beaten, the whores
It’s dawn and I feel last night
The cold, and the weight of my fright
CHORUS
Take me, St. Boniface
From this precipice of the street
Cradle me on your thin hard oak
In your scented smoke, I’ll find sacred sleep
Once I’m safe inside
I'm burned by my former pride
I was married, had a house of my own
It really wasn’t that long ago
These pews have saved some souls
Some broken, lost, or just old
In their creaking I sometimes hear
Faint hope as my rest draws near
CHORUS
Take me, St. Boniface
From this precipice of the street
Cradle me on your thin hard oak
In your scented smoke, I’ll find sacred sleep
For a time, I'm less of a ghost
Thanks to Luis, our gentle host
This window is all too brief
But brings such blessed relief
It starts over again tonight
Traveling careful and out of the light
A little luck, this rain will move on
And I’ll find this door next dawn
CHORUS
Take me, St. Boniface
From this precipice of the street
Cradle me on your thin hard oak
In your scented smoke, I’ll find sacred sleep

Temptation
© 1987 Tom Waits, Jalma Music
Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
Everything is made from dreams
Time is made from honey slow and sweet
Only the fools know what it means
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist
Well I know that she is made of smoke
But I’ve lost my way
He knows that I am broke
But I must play
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist
Dutch pink and Italian blue
He is there waiting for you
My will has disappeared
Now confusion is so clear
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist

The Tale of Minus Mary
Written by Dan Gabel
They threw us together
Up in this holler
One sunny April day
Just to see if we could make some music
In our old-timey way
She sang so pretty
Just like Kitty
With a little Patsy Cline
How could I ever see it coming
Mary’d break this heart of mine
We got together
Every Thursday
To laugh and sing and pick
Those mountain songs her daddy taught her
Before he got so sick
But then Mary
Took to traveling
First Dallas then New Orleans
Looking back I kind of figure
I should have known just what that’d mean
CHORUS
Now I'm minus Mary
And it was kind of scary
How quickly she fled my scene
Like some kind of apparition
Or a figment of my dreams
Was it my singin’, or my playin’
Or my drinkin’ that did us in?
Two of those are coming together
But one’s my favorite sin
I hope I see her
Out on the highway
And we stop and share a song
Maybe figure out together
What caused this good girl to go wrong
Might never happen
But I’ll keep on playing
And hope to get it right
But I can’t forget it’s so damn hard
Living minus Mary every night
CHORUS
Now I'm minus Mary
And it was kind of scary
How quickly she fled my scene
Like some kind of apparition
Or a figment of my dreams
Was it my singin’, or my playin’
Or my drinkin’ that did us in?
Two of those are coming together
But one’s my favorite sin

Medicine Show
Written by Dan Gabel
The orange-faced man and his medicine show
Pull into town and everyone knows
Cause the barker cries out so loud and with flair
"This elixir he brings is so incredibly rare
It will make you feel whole
Give you back your fair share"
I don't usually go for this kind of thing
But lately I've been on an awful string
This pain in my leg means my work is gone
And one look at my wife tells me she has moved on
I don't know where to
but she's long gone
Down at the tent they're filling the seats
I see the suit from the bank and that vet from the street
There's a feeling in here between hope and rage
We all know this town is on its final page
We've seen it all fade
to this one sad page
He takes to the stage in a bright white spot
Starts telling me how my problems are not
My fault alone there are others to blame
He knows who they are and starts naming some names
He'll clear them all out,
get rid of our shame
Because he's studied the problems a little you see
And made this elixir that's perfect for me
It works its way down to the pain in your life
Just buy four vials, he'll make it alright
Just give him a chance
and we'll all win this fight
It's been six long months and that elixir is drained
I'm left with nothing but this lingering pain
My orange-faced friend he hasn't been seen
Since he pulled out of town carrying most of our dreams
He said he'd be back
But it won't be for me
He said he'd be back
But it won't be for me
