Francis Bowles was my mother's cousin, but to me, always "Uncle Frank." He was born in New Jersey to Scottish parents, and grew up in Paisley, Scotland before coming back to the US to join extended family in Michigan, where auto industry jobs awaited after a stint in the Air Force. He was a small man with an outsized appetite for the drink, which tended to make his mouth and his boxer's hands both more active than they otherwise were. He said he quit drinking one day when ulcers got to be too much, quit cold turkey. But that he was never able to quit the Lucky Strikes that he smoked until he died. He used the phrase "one time" in a unique way, for emphasis, the way most folks use "I mean it." He was also one of my biggest supporters while growing up, always encouraging me to do it while I was young, no matter what "it" was. This is another song that never really came to life until the band played it together.
lyrics
One Time
By Dan Gabel
Frank went a buck twenty-five, with gloves tied to his hands
Fought featherweight in the Air Force 'till he couldn't take commands
Went home and found a barstool, forgot about his size
Mouthed off to the biggest locals and kept getting out alive
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Frank once loved a Scottish lass, he was taken by her brogue
They say she grew tired of life with such a rogue
So he swore off love forever, stayed single all his days
Said he gave it all one time, but it didn't go his way
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Frank said to do it one time
Lucky Strike un-filtereds from the day he was fifteen
Left stains between his fingers that never quite came clean
When they took his breath, he never cried about his plight
Said he'd tried that one time, and it didn't quite feel right
CHORUS
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Get out there while you're young
Take chances while you can
He said do it all one time
'Cause regret... will haunt a man
I have a tattered black-and-white of Frank back in his day
That fedora on his head and a beer not far away
I think about him often, and how he helped me fly
So Frank, here's to you, I remember, one time
CHORUS
One time, one time
Frank said do it one time
Get out there while you're young
Take chances while you can
He said do it all one time
'Cause regret... will haunt a man
